Hillbilly Horror is an American subgenre, often rooted in the concept of Southern Gothic, where a group of "civilized" outsiders (often young people from the city) venture into remote, rural areas—typically the Deep South, Appalachia, or the Southwest—and encounter a family or group of violent, often inbred, degenerate locals.
Key Conventions of hillbilly horror are:
Setting: Remote, isolated locations like deep woods, decaying farmhouses, abandoned roads, and dilapidated small towns, usually suggesting an area "forgotten" by modern society.
The Villains: The antagonists are typically a family unit, often characterized by inbreeding, physical deformities, cannibalism, and extreme violence. They represent an unhinged, "monstrous" version of the rural poor.
The Conflict: It's fundamentally a Clash of Cultures—city dwellers vs. country folk. The horror stems from the characters being stripped of their modern conveniences (like cell service or reliable transportation) and forced to contend with a primal threat from a group that operates outside the law and societal norms.
Themes: Degeneration, isolation, poverty, and the fear of the "other." The genre often relies on negative stereotypes about rural communities.
Outback Horror is the distinct Australian counterpart, where the vast, unforgiving Australian wilderness—the Outback—serves as a character in itself. The threats come not only from dangerous people but also from the terrifying, indifferent landscape.
Key Conventions of outback horror are:
Setting: The massive, desolate, and arid Australian Outback, coastal towns, or remote bushland. The landscape is portrayed as oppressive, beautiful, and fundamentally hostile to human life.
The Villains: Similar to Hillbilly Horror, there are often murderous locals (sometimes referred to as "feral," like the character Mick Taylor from Wolf Creek). However, the threat is also often the environment itself (nature gone wild) or the deep sense of isolation and existential dread it inspires.
The Conflict: The protagonist (often a tourist or a city-based Australian) gets lost, disorientated, or isolated in the vastness. The struggle is one of survival against the harsh environment, predatory wildlife, and dangerous inhabitants.
Themes: The hostile landscape, colonial anxiety, isolation, entrapment, and the darker side of the Australian national identity (often related to 'Ozploitation' cinema).
